How to reset a roaming profile

If you start getting recurring errors saying there is a problem with your roaming profile, ask someone else to sign in to your machine and, while signed in as them, perform the following:

  1. Open File Manager
  2. Right-click This PC and choose Properties
  3. Click Advanced System Settings (off to the right)
  4. Click Settings in the User Profiles box
  5. Highlight your account and press Delete
  6. Open C:\Users and confirm that user’s folder has been deleted
    • Contact support if it still exists
  7. Sign out of their account and then sign back in as you
    • It will take longer than normal to sign in and you will have to setup Outlook

For support personnel only

Try each of these in order one at a time.

  • Ensure the user’s folder has been deleted
  • Manually clean out the profile key from the registry
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
  • Rename user’s folder in D:\Users on the server
    • Rename JohnSmith to JohnSmith.YYYYMMDD
