Periodic Housekeeping

Do this on your primary workstation and on each remote desktop server you normally use

Instead of automatically deleting old files from your personal folders, we prefer to request that each person evaluate whether items are still needed. Personal folders include:

  • Downloads
  • Documents
  • Desktop
  • Pictures
  • Recycle Bin

You should find these in the upper-left corner of File Explorer but can also see them by pressing the up arrow to the left of the location input box in File Explorer (you may need to press the up arrow several times until it becomes greyed out).

We are not asking you to prune things you might need. Just focus on those items you definitely don’t need anymore. While you do this, keep in mind that we are charged for the offsite storage used by our backup system so your help keeps costs under control.

Here are a couple other things to do:

  1. Delete the Downloads folder that is in your Documents folder
    • This folder was created by the PPC Tools installer and can be removed
  2. Sort each folder above by size
    • Consider storing long-term items on the server instead
    • Ask where items can be stored that don’t need to be backed up
  3. Open Windows Settings and search for Installed Apps (don’t do this on a remote desktop server)
    • Uninstall older versions of software that are no longer needed
